Why travel can make you feel sick
Motion sickness happens when the balance organs in the inner ear send movement signals that do not match what the eyes see. This mismatch can cause Nausea, sweating, dizziness, tiredness, and sometimes Vomiting. It may happen in a car, boat, aircraft, or on a ride.
Symptoms often improve when the movement stops. Repeated vomiting, symptoms while completely still, or a new severe headache suggests another problem and should not be explained by travel alone.
Before and during a journey
Choose a seat with the least movement: near the front of a car, over the wings of an aircraft, or in the middle of a boat. Face forward, look at a distant fixed point, keep fresh air moving, and avoid reading or using a screen while moving.
Eat a light meal before travel and take small sips of water. Avoid heavy, greasy, or spicy food and alcohol. Keep your head supported, breathe slowly, and take breaks in fresh air when possible. Ask a pharmacist about travel-sickness medicines before departure, because some cause drowsiness.
When to seek help
Contact a clinician if nausea or vomiting continues after travel, prevents drinking, or keeps recurring on short journeys. A Travel Health Consultation can help if you are planning a long trip, have a medical condition, or need advice about medicines.
Seek urgent care for blood or green material in vomit, severe abdominal pain, confusion, fainting, a stiff neck, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine and marked weakness.
What to ask before travelling
Ask which seat and preparation may suit your route, whether a medicine is safe with your regular treatment, and how to manage symptoms if you need to remain alert for driving or work.

Questions people ask
Does looking at a phone make motion sickness worse?
It can, because close visual focus may increase the mismatch between what your eyes see and what your balance organs sense.
When should I ask for travel advice?
Arrange advice before travel if episodes are severe, recurrent, or likely to interfere with drinking, driving, or essential activities.
