Home remedies for middle ear infection

A middle ear infection develops behind the eardrum and may follow a Common Cold or nasal inflammation such as Allergic Rhinitis. Earache, fever, irritability, muffled hearing, or a sense of pressure can occur. Vertigo or marked imbalance is less typical and deserves attention.

Pain can improve as inflammation settles, but symptoms alone cannot show whether an infection needs prescription treatment. Children may pull at the ear, wake often, or respond less to sounds rather than describe pain.

Rest, offer frequent fluids, and keep the person upright when resting if that feels more comfortable. A warm, not hot, cloth over the outer ear may soothe pain. Use age-appropriate pain relief only according to the product instructions or advice from a pharmacist or clinician.

Keep water out of the ear if drainage or a perforated eardrum is suspected, and never insert cotton buds, oil, or other objects. Do not use leftover antibiotics or someone else's ear drops; the eardrum and cause need to be checked first.

Arrange a GP Consultation if pain is strong, symptoms are not settling, hearing remains reduced, or fluid is coming from the ear. A clinician can inspect the eardrum and distinguish infection from other causes of Earache.

Seek urgent care for swelling or redness behind the ear, a very unwell appearance, stiff neck, severe headache, repeated vomiting, new facial weakness, or sudden severe Hearing Loss. Babies, young children, and people with reduced immunity may need earlier review.

Ask whether the eardrum is intact, whether pain relief is suitable for the person's age and health, how long hearing may feel blocked, and which changes should prompt a return visit.
