What LPR can feel like

Laryngopharyngeal reflux, or LPR, occurs when stomach contents reach the throat or voice box. It may cause throat clearing, hoarseness, a lump sensation, cough, or unpleasant taste, sometimes without classic heartburn. Symptoms can overlap with infection, allergy, voice strain, or other throat conditions. Difficulty Sleeping may become part of the pattern when symptoms are worse after lying down, but persistent symptoms should not be assumed to be reflux.

Steps that may reduce irritation

Eat smaller meals and finish eating well before lying down. Remain upright after meals and avoid bending or exercising immediately after eating. Notice whether fatty foods, spicy foods, acidic drinks, chocolate, caffeine, or alcohol trigger symptoms, then reduce only the items that affect you. Avoid smoking, sip water instead of repeatedly clearing your throat, and use a calm voice while irritation settles. Raise the head end of the bed if night symptoms continue; extra pillows alone may bend the body and worsen pressure. Ask a pharmacist or clinician before starting reflux medicines.

When to seek medical advice

Arrange prompt assessment for difficulty swallowing, food sticking, painful swallowing, vomiting blood, black stools, unexplained weight loss, persistent vomiting, or chest pain. Seek emergency help for severe chest pressure, breathlessness, or fainting. Book a review for hoarseness, cough, or throat symptoms that persist or recur despite self-care. A clinician can check whether LPR, Insomnia, or another condition better explains the pattern.

Questions for your doctor

Do my throat and voice symptoms fit reflux, or should another cause be checked? Which food changes are worth trying? Would Insomnia Management or treatment for reflux help my night symptoms?
