Home Remedies for Knee Swelling

Short answer
Home care can ease mild knee swelling, but persistent, severe, hot, or injury-related swelling needs medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Helpful first steps
- Relative rest, elevation, cloth-wrapped cold pack, and comfortable movement
- Watch for
- Heat, fever, inability to bear weight, or repeated swelling
What knee swelling may mean
Swelling can reflect extra fluid around the knee after overuse, a twist, irritation, or inflammation. A swollen knee can occur with Knee Osteoarthritis, Knee Bursitis, Gout, a Meniscus Tear, an ACL Tear, or a Baker's Cyst, but the swelling itself does not identify the cause.
Notice whether the knee feels warm, whether movement is limited, and whether swelling appeared suddenly. These details help a clinician distinguish an irritated joint from an injury or inflammatory problem.
What you can try at home
Reduce activities that load the knee, such as running, deep squats, and repeated stairs, for a short period. Rest does not need to mean staying completely still: gentle movement within a comfortable range can help prevent stiffness.
Elevate the leg when sitting, use a cold pack wrapped in cloth for brief sessions, and consider light compression if it feels supportive and does not cause numbness, colour change, or increased pain. Do not place ice directly on skin. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an anti-inflammatory medicine is suitable for you, especially if you have other medical conditions or take regular medicines.
When to seek care
Seek urgent care if the knee is hot and very painful with fever, if you cannot bear weight, or if swelling followed a significant injury with a pop, deformity, or sudden instability. Arrange an assessment when swelling keeps returning, does not settle with simple measures, or limits walking and sleep. A clinician may consider imaging or Joint Aspiration when fluid needs testing or pressure relief.
Questions for your doctor
What is the likely source of the swelling? Should I keep exercising, and which movements should I avoid? Would testing the joint fluid or imaging help? Which pain-relief options fit my health history?
