Home Remedies for Knee Pain and Swelling

Short answer
Home care for knee pain and swelling may include relative rest, a cold pack, elevation, gentle movement, and careful medication use while you monitor for warning signs.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What knee pain and swelling can mean
Swelling can develop when the tissues inside or around the knee become irritated after activity, a twist, a knock, or ongoing joint wear. Pain may come from the kneecap area, tendons, bursae, ligaments, cartilage, or the joint lining. A swollen knee can also occur with conditions such as Knee Osteoarthritis, Knee Bursitis, Gout, or a Baker's Cyst; the pattern and accompanying symptoms help distinguish them.
Notice when the swelling started, whether the knee feels hot, and whether you can bear weight or fully bend and straighten it. Home measures can reduce symptoms, but they do not identify a torn ligament or cartilage injury.
Home measures to try
Reduce activities that increase pain, especially running, jumping, kneeling, and deep squats. Keep the leg moving gently within a comfortable range so the knee does not become stiff; short, easy walks may be suitable if they do not worsen symptoms.
Wrap a cold pack in a cloth and place it over the swollen area for brief periods, allowing the skin to return to its normal temperature between applications. Rest the leg in an elevated position when practical. A light compression support may feel comfortable, but loosen or remove it if you develop numbness, tingling, colour change, or increasing pain.
A pharmacist or clinician can help you choose a pain reliever safely, particularly if you have kidney disease, stomach ulcers, heart problems, take blood thinners, are pregnant, or use other medicines. Do not place heat over a newly swollen or hot knee unless a clinician advises it.
When to seek medical care
Seek urgent medical help if the knee is visibly deformed, you cannot bear weight after an injury, it locks, or you heard a pop followed by rapid swelling. Get prompt assessment for a hot, red, very painful knee, especially with fever or feeling unwell, because an infection or crystal-related inflammation needs medical treatment.
Arrange an appointment if swelling keeps returning, pain interferes with sleep or normal walking, the knee repeatedly gives way, or home measures are not helping. After a twisting injury, a clinician may assess for an ACL Tear or Meniscus Tear; pain below the kneecap can also involve Patellar Tendinitis or Chondromalacia Patellae.
Questions for your doctor or physiotherapist
Ask what may be causing the swelling, which activities are safe for now, and whether you need an examination or imaging. You can also ask how to use a support, when to start strengthening exercises, and which pain medicines fit your health history.

Questions people ask
Should I keep walking with a swollen knee?
Short, easy walking may be reasonable if you can bear weight and it does not increase pain or swelling. Stop activities that worsen symptoms and seek assessment if walking is difficult.
Is ice or heat better for knee swelling?
A cloth-wrapped cold pack is generally more suitable for a newly swollen or hot knee. Avoid applying it directly to skin, and ask a clinician before using heat when the cause is unclear.
When should knee swelling be checked?
Arrange care for recurring swelling, locking, giving way, persistent pain, or symptoms after a twist. Seek urgent help for deformity, inability to bear weight, or a hot red knee with fever.
