Home remedies for itchy eczema on hands

Atopic Dermatitis can make hand skin dry, itchy, inflamed, and prone to cracking. Repeated contact with water, detergents, solvents, fragrances, gloves, or metals can weaken the skin barrier and prolong a flare. Itching may be worse at night, and scratching can cause crusting or darker marks after inflammation settles. Hand eczema can resemble contact dermatitis, so the trigger and distribution are worth recording.

Wash with lukewarm water and a mild fragrance-free cleanser, then pat dry and apply a thick, plain moisturiser immediately. Reapply after washing and whenever the skin feels tight. Use protective gloves for cleaning or wet work, with a soft cotton layer if tolerated; remove them if sweat worsens symptoms. Avoid hot water, fragranced creams, harsh scrubbing, and picking at flakes. Cover open cracks with a clean dressing and seek advice about treatment rather than trying household acids, oils, or antiseptics.

Seek prompt care for increasing warmth, swelling, pus, spreading redness, severe pain, fever, or crusting that suggests infection. Urgent help is needed for facial swelling or breathing difficulty after an exposure. Arrange assessment when cracks bleed repeatedly, movement becomes difficult, sleep is disturbed, or careful protection does not improve the flare. A clinician can distinguish eczema from infection and select treatment for the hands.
