HPV is a group of viruses that can affect skin or moist linings. Some types cause warts, while others may produce no visible sign. A new growth, sore, bleeding area, or change around the genitals should not be diagnosed from appearance alone. Do not scratch, cut, burn, or tie off a growth, and do not use household acids or unlabelled wart products on genital skin.

Keep affected skin clean and dry, choose loose underwear, and avoid friction if the area is irritated. Wash your hands after touching a wart and avoid sharing towels, razors, or nail tools. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether a labelled treatment is suitable for a wart on ordinary hand or foot skin; products for those areas are not automatically safe elsewhere. Arrange an examination for a persistent or changing growth, genital wart, unusual discharge, bleeding, pelvic pain, or a sore that does not heal. Seek prompt care for severe pain, rapidly spreading redness, fever, or difficulty passing urine. A clinician can decide whether testing, treatment, or follow-up is appropriate; HPV-related changes may need attention even when they cause little discomfort.
