Short answer

Smaller meals, staying upright after eating and avoiding personal triggers may ease mild burning, but chest pain or persistent symptoms need medical advice.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding throat and chest burning

Burning that rises from the upper abdomen into the chest or throat often relates to stomach contents moving upwards. Acid reflux is a common explanation, while gastritis, a hiatus hernia or a peptic ulcer can cause related upper digestive discomfort. Heart symptoms can feel similar, so the sensation should not be self-diagnosed from location alone. Notice whether it follows meals, lying down, exertion, swallowing or particular foods.

Measures at home

Eat smaller portions, eat slowly and remain upright after meals. Avoid lying down soon after eating, and raise the upper part of your sleeping surface if night symptoms occur. Reduce foods or drinks that clearly trigger you, such as spicy or fatty meals, caffeine or alcohol. Loose clothing may reduce pressure around the abdomen. Ask a pharmacist about a suitable antacid or other acid reflux medication, especially if you are pregnant, take regular medicines or have kidney disease.

When to get help

Get emergency help for crushing or severe chest pain, pain spreading to the arm, jaw or back, sweating, faintness or trouble breathing. Seek prompt medical advice for vomiting blood, black stools, repeated vomiting, food sticking, unexplained weight loss or difficulty swallowing. Arrange review when burning is frequent, wakes you, or does not settle with sensible changes.

What to ask

Could this pattern be reflux or another digestive problem? Which medicines are safe with my other treatments? Do my symptoms require testing, and which changes should I try first?
