Home remedies for boils on the private area

A boil is a tender, infected lump that can fill with pus around a hair follicle. Friction, shaving and blocked follicles can contribute, but a lump in the groin or genital region can have other causes, including an inflamed cyst or a different skin condition. The lump is the presentation; it does not identify its cause by itself.

Apply a comfortably warm, clean compress for short periods, keep the surrounding skin clean and dry, and wear loose breathable underwear. Wash your hands before and after touching the area. Do not cut, lance, squeeze or use harsh antiseptics, perfume or home mixtures. Do not share towels, and cover any drainage with clean gauze.

Arrange prompt medical review if the lump is very painful, enlarging, recurrent, close to the vaginal opening or anus, or not settling. Seek urgent care for fever, chills, rapidly spreading redness, red streaks, severe swelling, difficulty passing urine, or feeling faint. A clinician may recommend antibiotics or abscess drainage rather than continued home care.
