Home remedies for bad nappy rash

Nappy rash often follows prolonged contact with urine or stool, friction, moisture, or fragranced wipes. The skin may look red, sore, shiny, or cracked. A rash in skin folds, with small surrounding spots or a persistent bright-red appearance, may have a fungal component and needs different treatment. Babies can also have other rashes, so the severity and pattern matter more than the label alone.

Change the nappy promptly after wetting or soiling. Rinse with lukewarm water or use fragrance-free wipes, then pat dry without scrubbing. Apply a thick protective barrier to clean, dry skin at each change and allow short periods without a nappy when practical. Fasten nappies comfortably, avoid talcum powder, antiseptics, perfumed products, and vigorous rubbing. Wash your hands before and after care. Ask a pharmacist or clinician before using steroid or antifungal medicine, particularly for a young baby.

Seek medical advice if the rash is severe, spreading, bleeding, blistered, oozing, or not improving with gentle care. Prompt assessment is needed for fever, marked pain, pus, swelling, or a baby who seems unusually unwell. A clinician can assess for fungal infection, bacterial infection, allergy, or another cause and recommend Emollient Therapy or Topical Antifungal Treatment when suitable.
