Home remedies for allergic sneezing

Sneezing is a protective reflex that clears irritants from the nose. In allergic rhinitis, the immune system reacts to substances such as pollen, dust mites or pet dander, leading to bouts of sneezing with itching, watery discharge or a blocked nose. A common cold can also cause sneezing, usually with a changing pattern of sore throat, cough or feeling unwell. The trigger and accompanying symptoms matter more than the sneeze alone.

Move away from the suspected trigger and keep bedroom surfaces free of dust with damp cleaning. Wash hands and face after outdoor exposure, change clothes if pollen is a trigger, and keep pets out of sleeping areas when animal dander causes symptoms. Saline spray or a nasal rinse can remove irritants; use sterile, distilled or previously boiled and cooled water for rinsing. A pharmacist can recommend allergy medication and explain nasal-spray technique. Avoid inserting cotton buds or other objects into the nose.

Get urgent help if sneezing occurs with facial or throat swelling, trouble breathing, faintness or rapidly spreading hives. Make an appointment if symptoms persist, interfere with sleep, cause recurrent nosebleeds, or remain unclear despite reducing triggers. Wheeze, cough or chest tightness can occur with asthma and should be assessed rather than treated as simple nasal allergy.
