Home medicine for throat itching

Throat itching can follow dryness, a viral illness, postnasal drainage or an irritant such as smoke. It may also occur as part of an allergic reaction, especially when it starts soon after a food, medicine or sting. Skin conditions do not usually explain an isolated throat symptom, but [Atopic Dermatitis](/conditions/atopic-dermatitis/), [Contact Dermatitis](/conditions/contact-dermatitis/) and [Hives](/conditions/urticaria/) can accompany allergy-related symptoms. A clinician may need to examine the mouth, skin and airway.

Sip water or a warm, non-irritating drink, use a humidifier if the air is dry, and avoid smoke, strong fragrances and foods that clearly trigger symptoms. Do not scrape the throat or use concentrated herbal oils. If itching began after a new product or exposure, move away from it and note the timing. Ask a pharmacist or doctor before taking an allergy medicine, particularly for a child, pregnancy or other medicines. Call emergency services immediately for swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, wheezing, faintness, severe voice change, or trouble breathing or swallowing. A persistent mouth or throat lesion also deserves review; conditions such as [Lichen Planus](/conditions/lichen-planus/) or [Skin Yeast Infection](/conditions/cutaneous-candidiasis/) need examination rather than home treatment. [Scabies](/conditions/scabies/) is a separate itchy skin condition and is not diagnosed from throat itching alone.
