What should you know about home care for impetigo?

Impetigo is a contagious bacterial infection of the outer skin. It can begin as small blisters or red sores that break and develop yellow-brown crust. It often affects the face or areas exposed to scratching, but it can occur elsewhere. Wash hands before and after touching the area. Gently clean sores with lukewarm water and mild cleanser, then pat dry rather than rubbing or peeling crusts. Use a clean dressing if advised, keep nails short and avoid scratching. Do not share towels, clothing, bedding, razors or cosmetics; wash used linens and clean frequently touched surfaces.
