What should you know about holistic sport massage?

Short answer
Holistic sport massage can support movement and comfort around training, but it should be adapted to the injury, timing, and person.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Purpose
- May support comfort, mobility, and training-related recovery.
- Timing
- Pressure and timing should change with the stage of an injury.
- Caution
- New swollen or unusually painful calf symptoms need assessment.
What sports massage involves
Sports massage is hands-on work aimed at muscles and surrounding soft tissue. Pressure, stretching, and movement-based techniques may be selected to address training-related tightness, mobility limits, or recovery preferences. It can be used before activity, between sessions, or after exercise, but the appropriate intensity and timing differ. Myofascial release is one related approach that uses sustained or guided pressure to influence movement and comfort.
Massage is not the same as diagnosing a muscle strain or muscle contusion. A fresh injury may involve bleeding, swelling, or tissue disruption, and forceful pressure can aggravate it. A therapist should ask about the mechanism of injury, symptoms, medicines, and training schedule before treatment.
Preparing for a session
Describe the exact location, onset, and behaviour of your symptoms. Tell the therapist about recent injury, surgery, skin problems, fever, blood-thinning medicine, or a history of clotting problems. Agree on pressure and a way to stop if the treatment becomes sharp or alarming. Gentle movement and a graded return to activity may fit ordinary muscle soreness after exercise; marked swelling, bruising, loss of strength, or difficulty using the limb calls for assessment rather than routine massage. Calf pain deserves particular caution if it is new and accompanied by swelling, warmth, redness, or breathlessness.
When massage is not the next step
Do not massage an area that is acutely swollen, hot, red, severely painful, numb, or visibly deformed until a clinician has assessed it. Seek urgent help for calf pain with sudden breathlessness or chest pain, or for a limb that becomes cold, pale, or weak. After a session, obtain medical advice for worsening pain, increasing swelling, fever, spreading redness, or new neurological symptoms.
Questions worth asking
Ask: Is this ordinary post-exercise soreness or could it be a muscle strain or contusion? Is massage appropriate now? Which movements should I avoid? Would myofascial release or rehabilitation be a better fit? What symptoms should prompt urgent review?

Questions people ask
Can sports massage treat a muscle strain?
It is not automatically suitable for a fresh strain; the injury stage and examination should guide treatment.
Why can I feel sore after massage?
Temporary tenderness can follow pressure, but worsening pain, swelling, weakness, or neurological symptoms require medical advice.
