Short answer

Holiday jet lag is a temporary body-clock mismatch after crossing time zones, causing sleep disruption, tiredness, and reduced alertness.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical trigger
Crossing time zones and following a new local schedule
Common effects
Difficulty sleeping, daytime sleepiness, poor concentration, or headache

How jet lag affects you

Your circadian rhythm still follows the time at your departure point while light, meals, activity, and social plans follow the destination clock. This mismatch can cause difficulty sleeping at the local bedtime, early waking, daytime sleepiness, poor concentration, irritability, or headache. Symptoms may be more noticeable after travelling across several time zones, particularly when sleep has already been shortened. Jet lag is different from an infection, although travel can also expose you to other causes of feeling unwell. Persistent symptoms without recent time-zone travel may need assessment for insomnia or another sleep problem.

Steps that can help

Before and during travel, protect the sleep you can get, drink fluids, and avoid heavy alcohol use. Once you arrive, use outdoor daylight and ordinary local activities to help your body clock adjust; follow the destination schedule for meals and bedtime. Keep naps brief and early if you need one, because a long late nap can make the next night harder. Do not drive, swim alone, or make safety-sensitive decisions when very sleepy. A travel-health clinician can help you plan around your itinerary, medicines, pregnancy, and health conditions. If sleep remains difficult, discuss a tailored approach rather than taking someone else’s sleeping medicine.

When medical advice is needed

Seek urgent care for severe confusion, fainting, breathing difficulty, chest pain, a sudden severe headache, or weakness on one side. Arrange medical advice if symptoms are intense, continue well beyond your adjustment period, repeatedly disrupt travel or work, or occur without a recent time-zone change. Also ask for help if a new medicine, loud snoring with pauses in breathing, or a mood change may be contributing. A clinician can separate jet lag from insomnia, infection, migraine, or another condition.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which sleep and light schedule fits your route, whether any medicine is suitable for you, how to manage daytime sleepiness safely, and which symptoms would mean your problem is not ordinary jet lag.
