Hives That Look Like Bug Bites: What to Know

A hive is a temporary swelling in the skin caused by the release of inflammatory chemicals. Individual welts may be pale, pink, or red, and nearby welts can join into larger patches. Unlike many bites, a hive may fade from one spot while another appears elsewhere. Hives can affect any skin area and may occur with deeper swelling around the lips, eyelids, hands, or feet, known as angioedema.

Bites are more likely to remain centred around an exposure site and may show a tiny puncture point, although appearance alone cannot reliably identify the cause. Take a photograph when the rash is visible and record when each mark appears.

Use a cool compress, wear loose clothing, and avoid rubbing or scratching the welts. Pause any newly started product, medicine, or supplement until a clinician advises you, but do not stop a prescribed medicine without guidance. A pharmacist or clinician can help you choose an appropriate antihistamine treatment and check for interactions.

Keep notes about foods, medicines, heat, pressure, exercise, and recent illness around the time the welts began. This pattern can help separate hives from other causes of skin rash.

Get emergency help immediately if hives occur with trouble breathing, wheezing, faintness, throat or tongue swelling, or difficulty swallowing. These symptoms can signal a severe allergic reaction. Seek prompt medical assessment when swelling is marked, the rash is painful rather than itchy, individual marks stay in the same place, or purple or bruise-like colour remains after the swelling settles.
