What should you know about hives on scalp?

Hives, also called urticaria, develop when skin cells release chemicals that widen nearby blood vessels and create temporary raised patches. Sweat, heat, pressure from a hat or helmet, hair products, infection, medicines, or foods may act as triggers, although a trigger is not always found.

The scalp can feel especially uncomfortable because hair makes it harder to see the edges of each welt. Scratching may increase irritation and can break the skin. Itchy skin and a broader skin rash may occur at the same time.

Keep the scalp cool, loosen tight headwear, and pause any newly introduced shampoo, dye, oil, or styling product until the cause is clearer. Use a cool, damp cloth briefly and avoid vigorous scratching. Take photographs and record foods, medicines, heat, exercise, or products used before the flare.

A pharmacist or clinician can explain whether an oral antihistamine is suitable for you and how to use it safely. Do not apply strong creams to the scalp or take oral corticosteroids without professional direction.

Call emergency services immediately for trouble breathing, wheezing, throat tightness, faintness, or swelling of the lips, tongue, or inside the mouth. This can accompany angioedema or a serious allergic reaction.

Arrange medical assessment if the rash keeps returning, lasts beyond a short episode, becomes painful, leaves bruising, or comes with fever or feeling unwell. A clinician can distinguish hives from infection, follicle inflammation, or another skin rash.
