Hives on the Arms Only: What to Know

A sleeve, watch, bracelet, bag strap, plant, cosmetic or cleaning product can contact the arms and create a local pattern. Pressure, sweating, heat or friction may have a similar effect. Hives can also begin in one area before appearing elsewhere, so check the face, lips, trunk and legs over time. Individual welts usually move, change shape or fade rather than stay fixed.

If marks remain in exactly the same spots, scale, blister, bruise or hurt more than they itch, another skin problem may be involved. The fact that only the arms are affected does not by itself establish the trigger.

Remove suspected jewellery, straps or new products and rinse exposed skin gently. Wear loose sleeves, keep the arms cool and avoid scratching. Take photographs at different times and record what touched the skin, along with medicines, foods, exercise and illness. Ask a pharmacist or clinician whether an oral antihistamine treatment is suitable; follow the product instructions and consider other medicines or health conditions before using one.

Get emergency help immediately if swelling affects the lips, tongue or throat, or if you develop breathing trouble, wheezing, faintness, confusion or rapid spread. Seek prompt care for a painful or bruising rash, blisters, fever, severe arm swelling or symptoms after a new medicine. Arrange a review if the marks recur, persist or leave skin changes.
