Hives inside the mouth: what to know

People may describe tingling, swelling, burning, ulcers, or a bumpy feeling as hives. Swelling of the lips, tongue, palate, or inside the cheeks can be angioedema and may accompany hives. Mouth ulcers and irritation have other possible causes, including injury, medicines, or infection. The appearance, onset, and symptoms elsewhere help a clinician distinguish them. A photograph of visible changes can be useful, especially when they fade before review.

If the mouth is swollen, stop eating the suspected new food and avoid further exposure while arranging urgent help. Do not put unfamiliar creams or home remedies inside the mouth. If there are only mild sores without swelling or breathing symptoms, use gentle oral care, avoid irritating foods, and seek advice if they persist or recur. Take medicines only as directed; an antihistamine may not treat an ulcer or airway swelling.

Call emergency services for tongue or throat swelling, trouble breathing or swallowing, drooling, voice change, dizziness, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Obtain prompt medical assessment for widespread hives, repeated mouth swelling, painful sores that prevent drinking, fever, or a new medicine followed by mouth changes.
