What should you know about hives in early pregnancy with twins?

Hives can appear as changing, raised patches on the skin. Heat, pressure from clothing, an infection, food, a medicine, or no identifiable trigger may be involved. Carrying twins does not by itself identify the cause. Pregnancy also brings many new supplements, medicines, and products, so make a list of everything recently started or changed.

Itching with swelling of the lips, eyelids, tongue, or throat can represent angioedema. A rash that remains fixed, becomes painful, blisters, or comes with fever needs a clinician to consider causes other than hives.

Use cool compresses, loose cotton clothing, and unperfumed moisturiser on intact skin. Keep the room comfortably cool and avoid scratching. Take photographs when the welts appear and note timing, meals, medicines, supplements, vaccinations, and possible exposures.

Contact your obstetric or maternity team before taking an antihistamine, steroid, herbal product, or topical treatment. They can weigh the pregnancy stage, twin pregnancy, symptoms, and your health history. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice, but report a suspected medicine reaction promptly.

Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, throat tightness, trouble swallowing, faintness, or fast swelling of the tongue, lips, or face. Sit or lie safely while help is arranged and follow any emergency plan already given to you.

Seek same-day maternity or medical advice for widespread hives, repeated episodes, a rash after a new medicine, fever, or severe itch that is not relieved by simple measures. Do not assume every pregnancy itch is hives.
