How long does hives last?

Hives are itchy, raised areas caused by temporary swelling in the skin. They can change size, merge into larger patches, and appear on different body regions. A rash that stays fixed in exactly the same place, feels painful rather than itchy, blisters, or leaves bruising may need assessment for another cause. Swelling under the skin, particularly around the eyes or mouth, can accompany hives.

Keep a simple symptom diary and photograph the skin before a welt fades. Use cool compresses, wear loose breathable clothing, and avoid rubbing or scratching. Consider advice from a pharmacist about an oral antihistamine that fits your age, health conditions, pregnancy status, and other medicines. Do not share medication or exceed its label or prescribed directions.

Call emergency services for hives with difficulty breathing, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, confusion, or rapidly worsening facial swelling. Arrange prompt medical care for a rash with fever, severe pain, skin peeling, bruising, or repeated episodes. A clinician can decide whether a different treatment or investigation is needed.
