Hives from Dog Saliva: What to Know

Contact hives may appear where a dog licks, or where saliva reaches broken or sensitive skin. The area can become red, raised and itchy soon after contact. The trigger may be a protein carried in saliva, or another substance on the animal such as dander, shampoo or outdoor material. Hives can also spread beyond the contact area. Facial or lip swelling is known as angioedema.

Note the dog’s contact, the body areas involved, the timing, and whether symptoms happen around other animals or products. A clinician may use this history to guide testing and prevention.

Gently wash the exposed skin with water and mild cleanser, then avoid further licking until the reaction is understood. Do not scrub or scratch the welts. Wash clothing or bedding that has saliva on it and observe whether symptoms settle. A pharmacist or clinician can advise about an oral antihistamine. Avoid applying another person’s prescription cream or taking a new medicine without checking that it is suitable.

Get emergency help for wheezing, breathing difficulty, throat tightness, faintness, or swelling of the tongue. Seek urgent assessment when facial swelling is rapidly increasing, vomiting occurs, or hives follow a bite or wound. Book medical review for repeated reactions, widespread welts, or symptoms that continue after washing and avoiding contact.
