Hives from a Cold Virus: What to Know

Most people with hives notice raised, itchy patches that change location or shape. During a cold, the infection itself may be associated with the hives, but medicines taken for fever, pain or congestion can also trigger a rash. A viral rash may look different from hives and may stay in place longer. Swelling of the lips, eyelids or face can accompany hives and is called angioedema.

Record when the illness started, when the welts appeared, every medicine taken, and whether each mark fades and returns elsewhere. This gives a clinician useful clues without assuming the trigger.

Rest, avoid overheating, and use cool compresses for itch. Do not start, stop or repeat a medicine without checking its label or asking a pharmacist, especially if the rash began after a new product. An oral antihistamine may be recommended for suitable people. Keep hydrated and avoid scratching, which can further irritate the skin. Arrange review if the welts recur after the cold has improved or if you cannot identify a safe medicine.

Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, throat tightness, faintness, or swelling of the tongue. Seek urgent care for rapidly spreading swelling, repeated vomiting, or marked weakness. Contact a clinician promptly if a rash is painful, blistering, bruises, involves the eyes or mouth, or comes with a high fever or severe illness.
