Hives but not itchy: what should you know?

Hives are raised areas caused by temporary release of inflammatory chemicals in the skin. They may be pale, pink, or red and can merge into larger patches. A single welt often changes shape or fades while another appears elsewhere. Lack of itch does not rule out hives, but a rash that stays fixed in one place, bruises, blisters, scales, or causes pain may have another explanation. Swelling around the lips, eyelids, hands, or feet can occur with hives and may fit angioedema.

Take clear photographs and record when each mark appears, how long it lasts, recent foods, infections, medicines, heat, pressure, and exercise. Keep the skin cool, avoid rubbing, and use gentle fragrance-free products. Do not start or stop a prescription medicine without advice. A clinician may consider an antihistamine treatment when symptoms continue; treatment choice depends on your age, health, and other medicines.

Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, throat tightness, faintness, confusion, or swelling of the tongue or mouth. Arrange prompt medical assessment for rapidly spreading welts, significant facial swelling, fever, skin pain, blistering, or marks that remain in the same spot. If episodes keep returning or the diagnosis is uncertain, book a dermatology or primary-care review.
