Treatment for hives around the eyes

The thin skin around the eyes can show swelling clearly. Urticaria causes raised, itchy welts that may move or fade, while angioedema can create deeper puffiness of an eyelid or the surrounding face. A new cosmetic, eye drop, medicine, food, insect sting, infection, heat, or rubbing may be relevant, but the cause can remain unclear. Pain inside the eye, vision change, discharge, or a fixed scaly rash is not typical of simple hives and needs a different examination.

Stop any newly introduced eye-area product and rinse away an irritant with clean water if appropriate. Use a cool clean compress over closed eyelids, avoid rubbing, and pause contact lenses and eye makeup until the skin settles. Do not put antihistamine or steroid creams into the eye. A clinician or pharmacist can advise whether an oral antihistamine is suitable; recurrent or troublesome swelling may need a treatment plan rather than repeated self-treatment.

Call emergency services for swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat, breathing difficulty, swallowing problems, faintness, or rapidly worsening facial swelling. Obtain urgent eye assessment for eye pain, reduced or blurred vision, marked redness, or difficulty moving the eye. Arrange medical review when episodes return, persist, follow a new medicine, or occur with fever or feeling unwell.
