Hives and sore throat

Hives are raised, itchy patches that often change position. A sore throat may accompany a viral illness such as a common cold, influenza, COVID-19, or glandular fever. It can also occur with tonsillitis or strep throat. Hives may be triggered by the infection, by a medicine, or by another exposure. Sore throat with sudden lip, tongue, or throat swelling is different: it may signal a serious allergic reaction. A clinician can use the timing, fever, cough, swollen glands, rash pattern, and examination findings to decide what needs testing.

Rest, sip cool fluids, and choose soft foods if swallowing hurts. Avoid smoke and other throat irritants. Keep a record of new foods, medicines, or products used before the hives. A pharmacist or doctor can suggest an antihistamine and appropriate pain relief after checking age, pregnancy, allergies, and other medicines. Do not share antibiotics or start leftover treatment. If symptoms follow a known trigger, avoid it until you receive advice. Acid reflux and allergic rhinitis can also irritate the throat, but they do not explain every episode of hives.

Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, wheezing, throat or tongue swelling, drooling with inability to swallow, faintness, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Seek prompt medical review for severe one-sided throat pain, muffled speech, dehydration, a persistent high fever, a rash that is painful or blistering, or symptoms that are worsening rather than settling.
