Hives After Swimming in the Ocean: What to Know

A sudden itchy rash after sea exposure can be urticaria caused by contact, pressure, cold, heat, or an ingredient on the skin. Tiny stings or irritated skin may produce burning or pinpoint marks rather than classic migrating welts. Note whether symptoms began in the water, after drying, or after applying a product. Swelling around the eyes, lips, hands, or feet may indicate angioedema.

Leave the water, rinse with clean fresh water, and remove wet swimwear or gear that may be rubbing the skin. Do not scrape, vigorously rub, or apply an untested household substance to the rash. Use a cool compress and avoid returning to the same water until the cause is clearer. Photograph the skin and record the location, sea conditions, products, and timing. Ask a pharmacist whether an oral antihistamine is suitable.

Get emergency help for breathing difficulty, throat tightness, tongue swelling, faintness, severe weakness, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Seek prompt assessment for widespread swelling, severe pain, blistering, fever, eye involvement, or a reaction that continues after rinsing. Arrange a medical review when the rash returns with swimming or occurs without a clear exposure.
