Histamine rash

Histamine widens small blood vessels and affects nearby nerve endings, producing itch and temporary swelling in the skin. Hives may appear suddenly after a trigger such as heat, pressure, infection, medicine, or food, although a clear cause is not always found. A fixed, scaly, ring-shaped, crusted, or blistering rash may point to another process rather than hives. Take clear photographs before the marks fade and record where they started, how long each mark lasted, and any new exposure. Use cool compresses, gentle cleansing, and loose clothing. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice, even if you suspect it caused the rash; contact the prescriber promptly. An antihistamine may be appropriate for hives, but the right product depends on your health and other medicines. Avoid applying several new creams at once, because that can make the pattern harder to interpret.

Seek emergency care for rash with breathing trouble, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, or difficulty swallowing. Arrange prompt assessment for a rapidly spreading rash, blistering, skin peeling, purple or bruiselike spots, severe pain, fever, or involvement of the eyes or mouth.
