What should you know about hirsutism with normal hormone levels?

Blood tests measure circulating hormones at the time of testing; they do not measure how strongly each follicle responds. Hair growth can also reflect local follicle activity, inherited traits, age-related change, or a medicine effect. The meaning of a normal result depends on which tests were done, when they were taken, and whether symptoms are changing. Hirsutism remains a clinical pattern, not a result that can be excluded by one normal test.

Bring a timeline of hair growth, periods, acne, scalp changes, and medicines to your appointment. A clinician may decide whether further evaluation is useful. Shaving, trimming, threading, laser hair removal, and electrolysis hair removal are possible approaches. Spironolactone treatment may be discussed for selected patients after a safety review.

Book a review if growth is progressing quickly or is joined by a deeper voice, marked acne, new scalp hair loss, or menstrual disruption. A normal earlier result does not explain away new accompanying changes. Seek prompt care for severe pain, sudden major swelling, or other acute symptoms.

Ask which hormone tests were checked, whether timing affects interpretation, and whether your examination suggests another cause. Discuss whether treatment should focus on hair removal, medicine, or both, and what change should trigger another assessment.
