Hip Clicking and Groin Pain: What It Can Mean and What to Do

Short answer
Hip clicking with groin pain can reflect irritation around or inside the hip, so the pattern of pain and movement matters.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Pain location
- Hip problems are often felt deep in the groin.
- Useful clue
- Catching, locking, or reduced movement makes an assessment more important.
- First step
- Reduce painful triggers and track what brings symptoms on.
The short answer
A click by itself may be harmless, especially when it is occasional and does not cause pain, weakness, or loss of movement. Painful clicking deserves more attention because it can occur when a tendon moves over bone, when the muscles around the hip are overloaded, or when a joint structure is irritated.
What hip clicking and groin pain may mean
The groin is a common place to feel pain that comes from the hip joint. Discomfort with sitting, getting out of a car, turning, squatting, or bringing the knee toward the chest can occur with hip impingement or irritation of the labrum, a ring of cartilage that helps support the joint. These conditions can present with clicking, catching, or a feeling that the hip is not moving smoothly.
Pain after running, kicking, sudden direction changes, or repeated lifting may instead involve the hip flexors or inner-thigh muscles. Stiffness that builds gradually, particularly after rest, can also occur with hip osteoarthritis. The sound cannot identify the cause on its own; a clinician considers the location, timing, triggers, strength, range of motion, and any injury.
What you can do now
For a recent, mild problem, reduce movements that repeatedly reproduce the click and groin pain for a short period. Avoid forcing deep squats, pivoting through pain, or stretching aggressively into the groin. Gentle walking may be reasonable if it does not increase symptoms during the activity or later that day.
Note which positions trigger the symptoms, whether the hip catches or locks, and whether pain follows exercise or appears at rest. A physiotherapist can assess hip and trunk movement, muscle control, and activity load, then build a gradual strengthening and mobility plan. Sports physiotherapy may be useful when symptoms began during training or a sport.
When to seek care
Arrange an assessment if groin pain persists, keeps returning, limits walking or sleep, or comes with painful clicking, catching, stiffness, or reduced hip movement. Seek prompt medical care after a significant fall or twist, or if you cannot bear weight, the hip appears deformed, or pain is severe and rapidly worsening.
Urgent evaluation is also appropriate with fever, a hot or visibly swollen hip, unexplained weakness or numbness, or new loss of bladder or bowel control. These features need assessment because they may point to an injury or a problem outside a simple muscle or tendon irritation.
Questions for your doctor or physiotherapist
Ask: Which movement is reproducing the click? Does the pain seem to come from the joint, a tendon, or the inner-thigh muscles? Should I temporarily change running, lifting, or sport? Which exercises are suitable now, and what symptoms mean I should stop? Would an examination or imaging help clarify the cause?

Questions people ask
Is hip clicking without pain a problem?
Occasional clicking without pain, weakness, catching, or reduced movement may not need treatment. Arrange an assessment if the sound becomes painful or follows an injury.
Can physiotherapy help hip clicking and groin pain?
A physiotherapist can check movement, strength, and activity load, then tailor exercises and a gradual return to activities when appropriate.
Should I keep exercising with groin pain?
Choose activities that do not reproduce or worsen the pain. Pause painful pivoting, deep flexion, and high-load exercise until you have clearer guidance.
