What should you know about a Hillrom otoscope?

During an ear examination, the clinician gently places a clean, single-use or disinfected tip at the ear opening and looks for wax, swelling, redness, discharge, a foreign object, or changes to the eardrum. The device does not measure hearing and cannot by itself identify every cause of ear pain or reduced hearing.

The examination is usually brief. Tell the clinician if the ear is painful, if you have had ear surgery, or if there has been discharge or injury. Children may need reassurance and a calm position so the ear can be inspected safely.

You generally do not need special preparation. Do not push cotton buds, fingers, or other objects into the ear before the appointment, because this can irritate the canal or move wax deeper. If wax blocks the view, the clinician may discuss safe removal before repeating the examination. Follow the advised treatment and keep the ear dry when instructed.

Seek prompt care for sudden hearing loss, severe ear pain, blood or pus from the ear, a foreign object, swelling behind the ear, or dizziness with new neurological symptoms. A child who is very unwell, difficult to wake, or struggling to breathe needs emergency help. Persistent hearing change or repeated ear infections also warrants assessment.

Ask what the otoscope examination showed, whether wax or infection is affecting the view, and whether you need a hearing test or follow-up. For a child, ask how to give any prescribed drops and which changes should prompt another consultation.
