What should you know about high blood pressure medication hydrochlorothiazide?

Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic, sometimes called a water tablet. By helping the kidneys pass more sodium and water into urine, it reduces the fluid moving through the circulation and can lower arterial pressure. It may be prescribed alone or alongside another blood pressure medicine. Because it can increase urination, taking it earlier in the day may be more practical, but follow the schedule your prescriber gives you. The medicine treats pressure; it does not remove the need for follow-up in Hypertension.

Take each dose as directed and keep drinking fluids according to your clinician's advice. Do not alter fluid or salt intake dramatically without discussing it. Your clinician may check blood pressure, kidney function and salts such as potassium, especially after starting or changing treatment. Report muscle cramps, marked thirst, weakness, confusion, troublesome dizziness, skin sensitivity in sunlight, or a new rash. Mention gout, kidney problems, diabetes, pregnancy, and every medicine or supplement you take. Keep a home blood pressure record if requested, including readings taken after rest.

Get urgent help for fainting, severe weakness, chest pain, severe breathlessness, sudden one-sided weakness, facial drooping, difficulty speaking, or a sudden severe headache. These symptoms may represent Stroke or Angina and need emergency assessment. Call your healthcare team promptly if vomiting or diarrhoea makes it hard to keep fluids down, if you are passing very little urine, or if dizziness causes falls. Do not take an additional dose to correct a high reading unless instructed.
