What should you know about HIFU treatment for prostate cancer?

A treatment probe delivers high-intensity focused ultrasound to a defined part of the prostate. The team plans the treatment using examination and imaging, then watches for effects on nearby structures. Some plans target a focus within the gland, while others may cover more prostate tissue; the choice depends on the cancer and the aim of treatment.

Recovery can include temporary urinary irritation, difficulty passing urine, blood in urine or semen, pelvic discomfort, erectile changes or bowel symptoms. HIFU can be followed by surveillance and further treatment if needed, so follow-up appointments and tests are part of the treatment pathway.

Before agreeing to HIFU, review your biopsy grade, scans, prostate size, urinary symptoms and other health conditions. Ask whether a catheter is expected, how long activity may be limited and which warning signs require contact. Get prompt medical advice for a blocked catheter, inability to pass urine, fever, worsening pain, heavy bleeding or new weakness after HIFU. Urgent assessment is also needed if you become confused, faint or unable to keep fluids down. Do not wait for a routine follow-up when these symptoms appear.
