What should you know about herbal antibiotics for infections?

An infection may be caused by bacteria, a parasite, a virus or irritation that is not an infection at all. Antibiotics are selected for particular bacteria and conditions; a herbal product may not contain a reliably measured ingredient or reach the affected tissue. Taking an unproven product can delay diagnosis, interact with medicines or cause liver and kidney problems.

Treatment depends on the site and cause. Acute bronchitis often needs a different approach from cellulitis, chlamydia, gonorrhoea, giardiasis or Helicobacter pylori infection. Brucellosis and conjunctivitis also require their own clinical assessment, so one remedy cannot cover them all.

Tell a clinician every herbal product, tea, oil or supplement you are using, including the label and amount. Do not stop a prescribed antibiotic early or share it with someone else. If infection is suspected, ask what examination or testing is needed and whether a prescription is appropriate.

For an established infection, follow the instructions exactly and report troublesome effects. Avoid applying concentrated oils to broken skin, eyes or genitals unless a qualified clinician has specifically advised it.

Get urgent help for trouble breathing, confusion, fainting, severe dehydration, a rapidly spreading rash, severe pain, or swelling around the eye. A high fever with marked weakness or a rapidly worsening wound also needs prompt assessment.

Arrange medical review when symptoms persist, return after seeming to improve, or affect a newborn, older adult, pregnant person or someone with reduced immunity. The right treatment depends on the infection's location and cause, not on whether a product is labelled natural.

Ask what type of infection is suspected, whether testing is needed, which treatment targets it, whether your supplement interacts with medicines, how quickly improvement should begin, and what warning signs require reassessment.
