Is hepatitis C dangerous?

Some people feel well while hepatitis C continues to affect the liver. Over time, inflammation may lead to fibrosis or cirrhosis, which can interfere with the liver’s ability to process substances, make proteins and manage fluid balance. Fatigue, poor appetite, nausea or yellowing may occur, but symptoms do not reliably show how much damage is present.

A liver function test provides part of the assessment. A clinician may combine it with other blood tests, examination and imaging when needed.

Arrange a GP consultation if hepatitis C is possible or has been detected. Share your medicine and supplement list, because some substances can add strain to the liver. Avoid alcohol until a clinician has advised you, and do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.

Keep follow-up appointments even if you have no symptoms. Confirmed infection can be assessed for treatment, and monitoring helps identify changes in liver health.

Seek emergency care for confusion, vomiting blood, black stools, severe sleepiness, major abdominal swelling or rapidly worsening jaundice. These symptoms may signal advanced liver trouble. Persistent vomiting, severe abdominal pain or a sudden decline in wellbeing also warrants prompt medical advice.

Ask whether infection is active, how your liver is being assessed, which medicines or supplements to avoid, and what follow-up schedule is suitable. Ask who to contact if jaundice, swelling or confusion develops.
