Hepatitis B vaccine site for adults

An adult dose is commonly given in an upper-arm muscle, although the vaccinator considers muscle size, previous injections, and any relevant medical issue before choosing the exact location. A brief needle sting followed by local tenderness, warmth, redness, or swelling can occur. These changes are near the injection and do not indicate whether the vaccine has worked or whether someone has hepatitis B.

Hepatitis B may cause no clear early symptoms. Fatigue and dark urine can be associated with liver illness, but each has several possible explanations and should not be interpreted from the injection site.

Wear clothing that allows easy access to the upper arm and tell the vaccinator about allergies, bleeding problems, immune-suppressing medicines, pregnancy, or a previous vaccine reaction. Afterward, move the arm gently and avoid vigorous rubbing of the area. Keep the dose and site documented, especially when more doses are scheduled.

Seek emergency care for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, fainting, or widespread hives after the injection. Ask for medical advice if the local reaction becomes increasingly painful, rapidly enlarges, or is accompanied by persistent fever or marked weakness. Yellow eyes, very dark urine, or repeated vomiting also warrant assessment; they are not a normal way to judge an injection site.
