Are hepatitis B and C infections of the liver?

Hepatitis means inflammation of the liver. The liver performs many tasks, including processing nutrients, handling medicines, and helping clear waste from the blood. When liver cells are inflamed, these processes may be disturbed. Infection can occur without obvious illness, so feeling well does not rule it out.

Hepatitis B and C are not the same condition and their longer-term course can differ. Either may become persistent. Ongoing inflammation can lead to scarring, which is why identifying infection early helps a clinician plan monitoring and treatment.

If exposure is possible, book an appointment for hepatitis testing rather than waiting for symptoms. A clinician may use blood tests for the virus and a liver function test to assess how the liver is working. Until you have advice, avoid sharing items that could carry blood and do not donate blood. Hepatitis B vaccination can prevent hepatitis B, but it does not prevent hepatitis C.

Get urgent help if you develop confusion, unusual difficulty staying awake, vomiting blood, black stools, severe swelling of the abdomen, or rapidly increasing jaundice. Arrange prompt medical review for ongoing fatigue, dark urine, nausea, or right-sided upper abdominal discomfort.

Ask whether you need tests for both viruses, what your liver results mean, whether anyone close to you needs testing or vaccination, and what follow-up is recommended.
