Heavy sneezing and runny nose: what to know

Heavy sneezing with a runny nose most often reflects allergy, infection, or nasal irritation; timing and accompanying symptoms help separate them. Itchy eyes, repeated episodes, and clear discharge point toward an allergic pattern, while sore throat, cough, fever, or body aches can occur with a viral infection.

Allergic rhinitis may follow pollen, house dust mites, or pet exposure and can continue while the trigger is present. A common cold or influenza can begin more suddenly and bring tiredness or fever. COVID-19 can overlap with cold symptoms, so exposure and local testing advice may matter. Sinusitis is more concerning when congestion is joined by facial pressure, reduced smell, or thick discharge that persists or worsens.

A watery nose can also follow smoke, perfume, spicy food, or a change in temperature. Note the colour and thickness of discharge, but do not use colour alone to decide whether antibiotics are needed.

Rest, drink fluids, wash your hands, and avoid smoke and strong scents. Saline nasal drops or a rinse may soothe the nose when prepared with safe water. If symptoms follow a clear trigger, reduce exposure where possible. A pharmacist can discuss suitable allergy treatment and check for interactions with your regular medicines.

Keep tissues nearby and clean frequently touched surfaces if an infection is possible. Consider staying home from close contact while fever or acute illness is present and follow current local advice about respiratory infections.

Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, confusion, severe weakness, dehydration, or swelling of the face, lips, or tongue. Arrange assessment for severe facial pain, eye swelling, persistent fever, symptoms that worsen after initial improvement, or a runny nose that does not settle and repeatedly disrupts sleep.
