Heat rash treatment: home remedies

Short answer
Helpful home remedies for mild heat rash include cooling the skin, gentle washing, air-drying, and loose breathable clothing.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why these measures help
Heat rash occurs when sweat cannot move freely through the skin, often after hot weather, exercise, or prolonged contact with damp clothing. The result may be tiny bumps, prickling, itch, or irritated redness. Keeping sweat from sitting against the skin reduces the conditions that maintain the rash. Do not assume every rash after heat exposure is heat rash; a clinician can assess persistent or atypical skin bumps.
Home care to try
Use a cool shower or a clean cool damp cloth for comfort, then pat the area dry. Change out of sweaty clothing, keep rooms ventilated, and choose light fabrics. Avoid tight straps, plastic coverings, vigorous scrubbing, perfumed sprays, and thick ointments over the bumps. Keep nails short and press or tap rather than scratch when itchy. If the skin becomes dry after washing, a light bland emollient may be considered; see Emollient Therapy.
Do not apply a medicated cream simply because another person’s rash looked similar. A topical corticosteroid can be useful in selected cases but needs advice about the exact preparation and body site; see Topical Corticosteroids.
When home care is not enough
Contact a clinician if the rash does not begin to settle after cooling and reducing sweat, or if it keeps recurring. Prompt assessment is sensible for tenderness, warmth, pus, crusting, fever, fast spread, or significant swelling. Urgent help is needed if you feel very unwell or have symptoms suggesting a severe allergic or infectious reaction.
What to ask
Ask what is safe to apply, whether a product or fabric may be contributing, and how to prevent recurrence during exercise or hot weather. Show the rash if it changes before the appointment.

Questions people ask
Is ice a good home remedy?
A cool cloth is gentler; avoid placing ice directly on skin because intense cold can irritate it.
Can I use fragranced powder?
It is better to avoid fragranced products, which may irritate already inflamed skin or cake in folds.
