Short answer

Adult heat rash is usually managed by cooling the skin, keeping it dry, reducing friction, and using gentle treatment for irritation.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common trigger
Heat, sweating, and occlusive clothing
First measure
Cool and dry the affected skin
Avoid
Scratching and heavy fragranced products

What heat rash means

Heat rash, also called miliaria or prickly heat, develops when blocked sweat ducts trap sweat near the skin surface. Adults may notice small red or clear bumps, prickling, itching, or a burning feeling where clothing, skin folds, helmets, or bedding hold in heat. It can look like a broader skin rash or skin redness, but a clinician may need to check another cause if the pattern is unusual.

Steps that can calm it

Move to a cooler place and let the skin air-dry. Wash gently with lukewarm water, pat rather than rub, and choose loose, breathable clothing. Pause strenuous activity until the area settles. Avoid thick greasy products, fragranced products, and scratching, because they can retain heat or injure the surface. A light, bland moisturiser may help dry or irritated skin; see Emollient Therapy for a related treatment option.

If itching or inflammation is troublesome, ask a pharmacist or clinician whether a suitable topical medicine is appropriate. Topical corticosteroids may be used in selected situations, but the product, strength, site, and duration matter, especially on thin or folded skin; see Topical Corticosteroids.

When to seek care

Arrange medical advice if the rash is spreading, repeatedly returning, very painful, draining fluid, warm and tender, or not settling after cooling and gentle care. Seek urgent help for fever, marked swelling, pus, rapidly worsening redness, or feeling seriously unwell. These features can point to infection or another skin problem rather than uncomplicated heat rash.

Useful questions for a clinician

Ask whether the appearance fits heat rash, whether a medicine is suitable for the body site, and which changes should prompt review. Mention new products, work or exercise in heat, sweating, and any repeated episodes.
