Heat rash on the waist: what to know

A tight waistband, belt, shapewear, or damp clothing can hold heat against the skin and block sweat ducts. The rash may sit in a fold or follow the line of clothing. Loosen the waistband and change into clean, dry clothing. Wash gently, rinse away cleanser, and pat rather than rub. Keep the waist cool with ventilation and a cool damp cloth. Avoid oily ointments, fragranced products, adhesive dressings, and vigorous exfoliation while the skin is irritated.

A fragrance-free emollient can reduce rubbing when the surface is dry, but heavy application may trap heat. If itching or inflammation is persistent, a clinician can decide whether a topical corticosteroid is appropriate and explain how to apply it safely.

Seek medical advice if the rash is worsening, spreading beyond the waistband, or failing to improve after the trigger is removed. Prompt assessment is appropriate for pus, fever, warmth with increasing tenderness, extensive blistering, or severe pain.
