Heat rash on the male chest: what to know

The chest can retain sweat beneath a shirt, chest hair, protective gear or a tight sports garment. Heat rash may look like tiny bumps, redness or fine blisters and can sting after exercise. Acne, folliculitis, contact dermatitis and fungal conditions can have a similar appearance. If bumps are centred on hairs, contain pus, form a ring, or persist in a sharply defined area, a clinician may need to check the diagnosis.

Change out of sweaty shirts, rinse gently after activity and dry the chest by patting. Wear breathable layers and wash workout clothing between uses. Avoid oily or fragranced products that may trap heat, as well as scratching or squeezing bumps. If shaving has irritated the area, pause until the skin recovers. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether a bland emollient or a prescribed anti-inflammatory treatment fits the pattern.

Book an assessment if the eruption keeps returning, spreads, becomes painful, forms pus-filled spots or does not improve after keeping the chest cool and dry. Seek prompt care for fever, rapidly spreading redness, severe tenderness, facial swelling or breathing difficulty. New medication followed by a widespread rash or swelling also requires urgent medical advice.

Ask whether the bumps are sweat-related, follicular or caused by contact with fabric or a product. Ask which cleanser and treatment are suitable for hairy chest skin. Mention exercise, shaving, new detergents, medicines, drainage, pain and whether the rash appears under clothing.
