Heat rash on the legs: treatment and care

Short answer
Treatment for heat rash on the legs starts with cooling the skin, reducing sweat and friction, and using medicines only when advised.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Scrubbing, shaving, and heavy occlusive products
How leg heat rash develops
Leg heat rash can follow sweating during exercise, hot weather, or prolonged contact with damp clothing. It may appear as clusters of tiny bumps, redness, prickling, or itch on the thighs, calves, or areas covered by socks and tight clothing. The rash is caused by blocked sweat ducts and irritation rather than by sweat itself being harmful.
The legs can also develop folliculitis, insect bites, allergic reactions, or another form of Skin Bumps. One-sided swelling, severe pain, or a hot tender area needs a different assessment because those features are not typical of a simple heat rash.
Treatment steps for the legs
Cool the legs with a fan, a cool shower, or a damp cloth, then pat them dry. Wear loose trousers or shorts made from breathable fabric and change after sweating. Avoid shaving over irritated skin, vigorous rubbing, fragranced body products, and thick occlusive creams while bumps are active.
A bland moisturiser can help if the skin barrier feels dry or tight; see Emollient Therapy for product guidance. A pharmacist may recommend an anti-itch option or a suitable topical corticosteroid after considering the site and appearance. Do not self-treat a weeping, infected-looking, or unexplained rash with steroid cream.
When to seek care
Book a clinical review if the leg rash does not improve after avoiding heat, keeps recurring, or interferes with sleep or walking. Seek prompt care for increasing pain, pus, fever, rapidly spreading redness, or swelling of one leg. Emergency help is needed for trouble breathing, faintness, or swelling of the lips or face.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which treatment fits the rash, whether shaving or a product may be contributing, and how long to try home care. Explain whether the rash follows exercise, socks, compression clothing, travel, or a new detergent.

Questions people ask
Can I exercise with heat rash on my legs?
Resting from hot, sweaty activity while the rash settles can reduce irritation; resume gradually when the skin is comfortable.
Is every leg rash heat rash?
No. Bites, folliculitis, eczema, and infection can resemble it, especially when pain, pus, or one-sided swelling is present.
