Heat rash in Black adults

Heat rash develops when sweat ducts become blocked in hot, humid conditions. On richly pigmented skin, colour change may be subtle or appear darker, purplish, or grey rather than bright red. Tiny bumps and a rough or prickly surface can be easier to notice than redness. Other fold rashes and infections can look similar, particularly where sweat and friction persist.

Cool the affected area, wash gently, and pat it dry. Wear loose breathable clothing and take breaks from heat, especially after exercise. Avoid scratching, fragranced products, and heavy occlusive creams over sweaty skin. Once irritation settles, lingering darker or lighter colour can remain after inflammation; protect exposed skin from sun and avoid unregulated lightening products. Ask a clinician whether an emollient or topical corticosteroid is suitable.

Get medical advice if the area is painful, hot, swollen, wet, crusted, or producing pus, or if the colour change is rapidly expanding. Fever or feeling unwell needs prompt attention. Arrange review if symptoms persist after cooling and drying, since redness may be less obvious and another diagnosis can be missed without examining the skin closely.

Ask what visual and texture changes to monitor, whether post-inflammatory colour change is present, and which treatment is safe for the affected site.
