Heat rash on the hands and feet

Gloves, socks, footwear, and prolonged activity can trap warmth and moisture. Heat rash may produce tiny bumps, prickling, itch, or redness on the backs of the hands, between fingers, or around the feet. Blisters, peeling, deep cracks, or a rash limited to the palms and soles can have other explanations and may need a clinician's assessment.

Remove damp gloves or socks, wash gently, and dry carefully between fingers and toes. Choose breathable footwear, rotate shoes so they can dry, and take breaks from occlusive equipment when safe. A cool compress can soothe the area. Avoid scratching, harsh antiseptics, and thick fragranced creams; a light bland emollient can support dry skin, as described in Emollient Therapy.

If inflammation is strong, ask a pharmacist or clinician before using a topical corticosteroid, especially on thin skin, broken skin, or between toes. The choice depends on the diagnosis and location; see Topical Corticosteroids.

Arrange assessment if the skin is painful, hot, swollen, cracked, draining, numb, or difficult to move, or if fever develops. Persistent peeling, recurrent blisters, or changes that do not respond to cooling may need evaluation for infection, eczema, or another cause. Sudden swelling with breathing trouble requires urgent care.

Ask whether gloves, footwear, sweating, or contact with a product could explain the pattern, and whether a sample or examination is needed. Note whether the hands and feet change together and whether cooling alters the symptoms.
