Heat rash in the female genital area

Heat and sweat can collect where skin touches skin, while underwear, pads, exercise clothing, or shaving may add friction. Heat rash affects external skin; vaginal discharge, odour, sores, burning with urination, or deep pelvic pain point to issues that need a different assessment. Genital [skin redness](/symptoms/skin-redness/) and [skin bumps](/symptoms/skin-bumps/) are not specific to heat rash.

Rinse the external area with lukewarm water, pat dry, and change out of damp underwear or exercise clothing. Choose loose, breathable underwear and avoid fragranced washes, wipes, sprays, douching, and scratching. Keep products away from internal vaginal tissue unless prescribed. Do not use steroid creams or other medication in this sensitive area without advice; a bland [emollient therapy](/treatments/medical-dermatology/emollient-therapy/) product may be considered for external dry skin only.

Arrange prompt medical care for sores, blisters, pus, marked swelling, severe pain, fever, unusual discharge, strong odour, or pain when urinating. Seek urgent help for rapidly increasing swelling, difficulty passing urine, or feeling faint. If external irritation persists despite cooling and drying, a clinician can distinguish heat rash from infection, allergy, or another [skin rash](/symptoms/skin-rash/).

Ask whether the change is limited to external skin, whether a product or clothing is contributing, and what cleansing routine is appropriate. Ask specifically which, if any, [topical corticosteroids](/treatments/medical-dermatology/topical-corticosteroids/) can be used safely in that location.
