Heat rash in adults: what to know

Adults may develop heat rash during hot weather, while working in warm rooms, or beneath clothing and protective equipment that holds sweat against the skin. Small bumps, redness, stinging, and itch are common patterns. The condition can occur on the trunk, neck, groin, or skin folds. A rash that looks different, keeps returning, or follows a new product may need a different explanation.

Cool the room and take a break from heat. Wear loose, breathable clothing and replace damp garments. Rinse sweat away with mild cleanser and lukewarm water, then pat dry. A cool compress may ease stinging. Avoid oily layers, perfume, harsh exfoliation, and picking at bumps. If dryness develops after washing, ask a clinician about suitable emollient therapy; topical corticosteroids should be used only with appropriate medical guidance.

Contact a clinician when the rash becomes painful, swollen, hot, crusted, or pus-filled, or when fever accompanies it. Urgent care is needed for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or face, collapse, confusion, or signs of serious heat illness. Medical review is also sensible when cooling and skin care do not improve the problem or when the diagnosis is uncertain.

Ask how the rash differs from other skin bumps or skin redness, whether a medicine could be contributing, and what treatment is safe for the affected area. Describe heat exposure, clothing, exercise, new cosmetics, and any discharge or tenderness.
