Heat-Induced Urticaria Treatment

Heat-induced urticaria produces temporary itchy wheals after warming, sweating or exertion. Treatment aims to reduce the skin reaction, limit avoidable triggers and keep you safe if swelling extends beyond the skin. A clinician will consider the appearance, timing, medicines, illnesses and whether symptoms occur with exercise or only with direct heat. A rash that stays in the same place or leaves bruising may need a different evaluation.

During a flare, stop exertion, cool gradually and remove tight or insulating layers. For recurring symptoms, ask a clinician about oral antihistamine therapy, including the best timing and possible drowsiness. Do not combine products with similar ingredients or use leftover steroid tablets. Oral corticosteroids may be considered by a clinician for selected severe situations, but they are not a routine self-treatment. Record triggers and response so the plan can be adjusted safely.

Emergency care is needed for throat or tongue swelling, breathing difficulty, collapse, severe dizziness or rapidly worsening symptoms. Seek prompt advice after a reaction to a new medicine or food, particularly if swelling involves the face. Arrange a dermatology or primary-care review when attacks are frequent, affect work or sleep, or continue despite cooling and an agreed treatment plan. Fever, blistering, pain or bruising is a reason to reassess the diagnosis.
