Heat Hives on Black Skin

Heat hives, or cholinergic urticaria, are raised itchy spots that follow a rise in body temperature. On brown or Black skin, redness may be subtle or difficult to see. The skin may instead look darker, purple-grey, or close to its usual colour while feeling itchy, prickly, or swollen. Hives often change shape or location and may fade after cooling.

Look at texture as well as colour: run a clean fingertip gently over the area without scratching. A rash that remains fixed, flakes, blisters, becomes painful, or leaves lasting dark marks may need assessment for another condition or irritation.

Move away from heat, loosen clothing, and use a cool damp cloth. Avoid direct ice, vigorous rubbing, and harsh scrubs, which can injure or irritate the skin. Choose breathable fabrics and moisturise with a bland, fragrance-free product if the surrounding skin feels dry. Take photographs in consistent lighting, since colour changes can be easier to compare over time.
