What should you know about heat friction rash?

Short answer
A heat friction rash develops when sweat, warmth, and repeated rubbing irritate the skin, often in folds or beneath tight clothing.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How heat and rubbing interact
Moisture makes skin more vulnerable to friction. Repeated contact can cause redness, stinging, rawness, or small bumps, and broken skin can become infected. In skin folds, this pattern may be Intertrigo. A rash with a clear contact outline may be Contact Dermatitis; tiny prickly bumps may be Heat Rash. Atopic Dermatitis, Psoriasis, Ringworm, Scabies, or a Drug Rash can resemble irritation, so location, timing, scaling, and new exposures matter.
Reducing irritation
Pause the activity that caused rubbing and cool the area. Wash gently with lukewarm water, then pat completely dry. Wear clean, loose, breathable clothing and change damp garments promptly. Keep skin folds dry and reduce skin-to-skin contact with soft, clean fabric. Avoid deodorants, fragrances, harsh cleansers, and scratching over the affected area. If the skin is open, avoid experimenting with creams and ask a clinician or pharmacist about safe protection.
When to have it checked
Seek urgent help for facial swelling, breathing trouble, faintness, severe pain, extensive blistering, or confusion. Arrange prompt care if the area becomes hot, rapidly more painful, swollen, foul-smelling, or produces pus, or if fever develops. A rash that repeatedly returns, forms rings, involves the genitals, or fails to settle after removing friction should be examined.

Questions people ask
Can friction rash become infected?
Yes. Cracked or raw skin can allow infection, particularly when it stays warm and damp.
Should I cover a friction rash?
A clean, breathable layer may reduce rubbing, but trapped moisture can worsen it; keep the area dry and seek advice if skin is open.
